THE APEX AND THE APEX II

The Apex Series

THE APEX was the first amphitheater design for The EnWood Design Collection, and today is the most popular. This structure utilizes laminated wood arches and purlins of Southern Yellow Pine, making it one of the most attractive wood amphitheaters in the industry.

The Apex is strong on acoustics as well as aesthetics. The natural acoustical quality of wood allows for superior sound even in an outdoor atmosphere. The Apex is ideal for those seeking high visual impact, yet the serenity of nature.

The Apex is competitively priced and has great versatility. Sized to specifically fit your needs, the Apex can be retrofitted with spacious side and back rooms ideal for cast staging, restrooms, equipment storage.

The Apex model is also available with optional front bays for extended covered space. Our sales team can discuss the optional sizes to specifically fit your requirement. THE APEX II allows for a more open feeling with the elimination of the wall decking.

SHELTER SIZE

The Apex shelter size refers to the distance across the front of the shelter at ground level. For example, a 40’ Apex amphitheater measures at ground level, 40’ back to back of the arch span, (the outermost edge of the front left exterior arch to the outermost edge of the front right exterior arch). The depth of the amphitheater is measured at ground level, from center front, to center back wall. The arch leg height is measured from ground level to the underside of the deck (the back of the arch leg) Custom sizes are also available.

THE APEX AND THE APEX II PACKAGE COMPONENTS

BEAMS:

Pressure treated, prior to gluing, laminated perimeter beams and the interior purlins. Steel connections and bolts that connect the beams to the arches.

WALL DECK for the Apex only

DESIGN LOADS

The typical design load allows for:

  • 12 pounds per square foot dead load
  • 30 pounds per square foot live load
  • 20 pounds per square foot wind load. (Equates to 100 MPH)

There are variables that affect the design sizes of the members, specifically the arches and the interior purlins, and those variables generally include live load conditions which are usually location specific. Building Codes usually dictate the applicable loads to be applied in the member size designs.

PRESSURE PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT

As noted in the list above, all components are treated: the wood arches, beams and purlins, wall and roof decking, and the fascia are fabricated with lumber pressure treated, with Penta WR Type “C” (.3 pcf [3 tenths of a pound of preservative per cubic foot of wood] retention).

EnWood utilizes the pentachlorophenol treatment because of its premier qualities and the treatment does not discolor the wood and can be stained or painted.
