The Raleigh and the Raleigh II

THE RALEIGH and THE RALEIGH II are perhaps the most popular laminated wood shelters in the market, and certainly the most popular shelters of The EnWood Design Collection. These shelter designs are the “work-horse” of the industry because of their durability and versatility,

The design combines laminated wood curved-tapered beams, laminated wood columns, and tongue and groove wood roof decking for beauty, strength and versatility. Both models are available in numerous sizes with standard widths up to 60’, and with custom widths to 70’.

THE RALEIGH is designed with column spacing 8’ on center in the length direction, and 2’ overhangs. Tongue and groove solid wood decking is the key components of the roof system, and can be ordered either in random lengths or specified lengths.

THE RALEIGH II is designed with column spacing 10’ on center, overhangs of 2’6”, and utilizes a multi-span roof decking system. EnWood Structures’ unique Multi-Span Deck System allows increase spacing of structural laminated members without affecting the beauty and durability of the Raleigh design. By spanning three or four supports, the Multi-Span Deck System increases load-carrying capacities. With greater span capacity, fewer support members are required, thus lowering costs and decreasing the time needed for installation.

Both the Raleigh and the Raleigh II can easily be partially or fully enclosed for dual use as concession centers, restrooms, storage facilities, and administrative space. Competitively priced, these shelters are ideal for recreational and picnic areas, playgrounds, skateparks, and community and event gatherings.

Need additional versatility? Both shelter models can also be shipped with the functional Bar-B-Q roof system, or a distinctive hip roof system. Other popular options available include: metal roof, steel columns, surface mounted columns, rails, benches, staining, cupolas.

SHELTER SIZE

THE RALEIGH
The size of the Raleigh shelter is expressed by the width and the length of the roof area. For example, the roof of a 30’ x 44’ Raleigh shelter is 30’ wide and 44’ long, excluding the thickness of the 2” nominal size fascia boards. The pressure treated laminated wood columns are spaced at 8’ intervals in the length direction of the shelter. The roof decking extends past the beams 2’ at each end of the shelter. In the width direction of the shelter, the roof extends past the center-line of the columns 2’. Custom sizes are also available.

THE RALEIGH II
The size of the Raleigh II is expressed by the dimensions of the width and the length of the roof area. For example, the roof of a 30’ x 45’ Raleigh II is 30’ wide and 45’ long, excluding the thickness of the 2” nominal size fascia boards. The Raleigh II shelter’s beams and columns are spaced at 10’ intervals and the end overhangs are 2’ 6”. Custom sizes are also available.

THE RALEIGH and The Raleigh II PACKAGE COMPONENTS

COLUMNS:
Pressure treated, prior to gluing, laminated wood columns, 11’ 9” long – to be embedded 3’ 9” in the concrete for stability. The lumber is treated prior to gluing which affords full penetration to the core of the columns. Special 4” annular nails to be “partially nailed” into the portion of the columns embedded in the concrete footings to provide improved anchorage against wind uplift.

CURVED-TAPERED BEAMS:
Curved-tapered laminated wood beams that rest on the columns. Steel plates and bolts that connect the beams to the columns.

ROOF DECK:
2x6 or 2x8” (nominal sizes) #1 grade Southern Yellow Pine wood decking, tongue and groove either specified lengths or random lengths, is nailed to the top of the beams. Galvanized nails to attach the deck to the beams.

FASCIA:
2x6” pressure treated, #1 grade Southern Yellow Pine, fascia board to be attached at the eaves and gables. Galvanized nails to attach the fascia to the beam ends and the deck.

FELT & SHINGLES:
One layer of #30 roofing felt to be applied on top of the wood deck. 25 yr. 3-Tab fiberglass shingles, standard color Autumn Brown, other color options available upon request. Metal roofs available and priced upon request.

ROOF PITCH
The standard roof pitch for the Raleigh and the Raleigh II is a 3/12 pitch. A roof pitch up to 6/12 can be provided.

DESIGN LOADS
The typical design load allows for:
12 pounds per square foot dead load
30 pounds per square foot live load
20 pounds per square foot wind load. (Equates to 100 MPH)

There are variables that affect the design sizes of the members, specifically the columns and the curved beams, and those variables generally include live load conditions that are usually location specific. Building Codes normally dictate the applicable loads to be applied in the member size designs.

PRESSURE PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT
As noted in the component list above, the laminated wood columns are fabricated with lumber pressure treated prior to gluing with Penta-WR type “C”, at .6 pcf [6 tenths of a pound of preservative per cubic foot of wood] retention for “ground contact”). For applications where the treated member is not in ground contact, the treatment retention is .3 pcf. The fascia boards are treated with pentachlorophenol, and the .3 pcf retention is used.
EnWood utilizes the pentachlorophenol treatment because of its premier qualities and the treatment does not discolor the wood and can be stained or painted.
